A Healthier Home and a Better Life  

By early 2020, Stephanie and her family moved into their new Habitat home. The difference was immediate. Stephanie’s youngest son, who had frequently suffered from nosebleeds due to the mold, experienced a significant improvement in his health once they moved into their new, mold-free home.  

Financially, the new house was a blessing. “In New York, housing was so expensive that I couldn’t afford a home with enough space for my family. Moving to North Carolina and securing an affordable mortgage has made a huge difference. I no longer have to worry about the constant stress of paying bills or finding a place to live,” Stephanie explains.  

Connecting with a New Community  

The move also brought Stephanie closer to a supportive community. Her new home allowed her to remain in the same area where she had built connections and friendships. “I have made some wonderful friends here, and my kids have great friends who live nearby. It’s comforting to know that I can rely on the community for support,” she says.  

The tight-knit community and proximity to her parents have been invaluable. “Having family and friends nearby means a lot, especially when it comes to emergencies or just having a support system. The respect and kindness in this neighborhood are remarkable,” Stephanie adds. 

Overcoming Challenges and Finding Joy  

Stephanie’s journey wasn’t without its struggles. The COVID-19 pandemic caused delays in the completion of their home, pushing the timeline to late 2020. Despite these setbacks, the process was rewarding. Stephanie recalls the excitement of seeing their home progress and the joy of finally moving in. “Watching the house being built, even if it took longer than expected, was worth it. It was thrilling to see the notes from the workers and the progress being made,” she says.  

A Brighter Future  

Stephanie’s experience with Habitat for Humanity has inspired her to give back. She has volunteered with local organizations and shared her story to encourage others to pursue similar opportunities. She also emphasizes the importance of financial education, having participated in courses that helped her manage her finances better.  

Stephanie’s story is a testament to the transformative power of affordable housing. Her journey with Habitat for Humanity has provided her family with a stable, healthy home and a supportive community. It’s a reminder that perseverance and support can lead to a brighter, more secure future even in the face of adversity. As she looks forward, she remains hopeful and grateful. “This home has given us a sense of stability and freedom that we didn’t have before. It’s something I can pass down to my children, and that’s priceless,” she says.
