For many, the path to homeownership is a journey marked by hope, determination, and, often, significant challenges. Stephanie’s story is a powerful example of how affordable housing can transform lives.
From New York to North Carolina: A Fresh Start
Stephanie was born and raised in New York. At age 15, her family moved to North Carolina when her father was offered a new job. For several years, Stephanie traveled to and from North Carolina and New York and then, in 2015, decided to move to North Carolina permanently. She initially lived close to her parents in a trailer home not far from a local gas station. Here, she first encountered Habitat for Humanity (then, Our Towns Habitat), thanks to her mother’s suggestion to explore the program as their living conditions were deteriorating.
The trailer was in poor shape—mold in the master bedroom, broken windows, and damaged vinyl flooring. It was clear that something needed to change. Stephanie recalls, “The trailer was affordable, but it was far from ideal. The living conditions were harsh, and we had mold problems that worsened over time.”
Navigating the Process
Stephanie’s journey with Habitat for Humanity began with an in-person application after she learned about the program online. The process was thorough, involving information sessions and detailed paperwork. She appreciated the clear guidance she received, which was crucial in navigating the steps involved.
“It was a long process…but it was worth it,” Stephanie says. When Habitat learned of Stephanie’s living conditions, they understood immediately her need for a better place to live.
Throughout this time, Stephanie dedicated many hours to fulfilling the program’s requirements. She worked alongside volunteers to build her new home and actively participated in community service, including lending a hand at a local church. All while caring for her family and working full-time as a manager at a popular restaurant in Charlotte, Stephanie’s commitment to her career and family demonstrates her resilience in the face of adversity and exemplifies the many Habitat homeowners who balance hard work to achieve a better quality of life.
