Women Build

What started as a casual conversation among a small group of Charlotte area women in 1991 has grown into an international movement of women empowering women through affordable housing. To date, nearly 5,700 homes have been constructed by crews of women in the U.S. and around the world.

For more than thirty years, Habitat Charlotte Region has continued to bring together women throughout the Charlotte region who collectively make an impact on affordable homeownership in the communities in which they live and work.

After receiving a call on February 22, 2022, that May had been accepted into Habitat Charlotte Region’s Homeownership program, she cried and immediately called her mom, who was also ecstatic about the news. “I’ll be the first person in my family to own a home,” she said. It took a lot of persistence and completing Habitat’s Money Matters financial literacy program for May to find herself on her journey to homeownership.

Family and friends often gather at her place now, and she looks forward to grilling with them in her future backyard. She also looks forward to living in a neighborhood that is safe for her kids. “I’m super excited about this move, and I know I’ll never have to move again,” she says.

2024 Women Build Volunteer Opportunities

Women Build will kick off in May at a home in the Meadows at Plato Price in west Charlotte and will continue through the summer. Come and join us to continue the wonderful tradition of empowering women around the world!
